FDA Prevents Cigarette Companies from Giving Free Samples
As product advertisements become more vivid and suggestive, the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) is fighting to suppress or even eliminate tobacco companies advertising and gifting. Because the media used in advertising is suggestive of cigarette smoking being cool and harmless, the FDA fears these messages are targeting teenagers and other underage consumers. The administration is hoping to prevent young consumers from smoking and believing that the habit is not unhealthy.
The FDA has created several laws pertaining to the tobacco industry. These laws were made in hopes of limiting exposure to tobacco media as well as using signage that shows teenagers the harmful side effects of smoking. There are also firm reminders that anyone under the age of 18 is prohibited from smoking and anyone caught trying to purchase tobacco products for an underage person will be prosecuted. These signs are posted in nearly every convenience store and retailer across the country.
The FDA hopes to pass the following laws: restrict the sale of tobacco products in vending machines, require vendors to put the products behind the counter and demand picture ID to purchase cigarettes, outlaw any free cigarette samples or incentives when cigarettes are purchased and finally banning any tobacco company from sponsoring entertainment and sporting events.
