Smoking in Movies

Odds are you’re a bit worried about your children and young teens watching prominent scenes of characters smoking on both TV and on the big screen. The good news is that smoking in top-grossing movies has declined steadily since the early 2000s and is actually showing a 56 decrease in the last decade. This is good news for parents who don’t want to have to monitor their directstartv.com channels too closely to make sure their children don’t come across incidents of smoking.
One of the more notable films of the past decade that had lawmakers up in arms over smoking was the first Men in Black picture. In several scenes the main characters were seen glamorizing smoking and this film prompted outrage from Capitol Hill all the way to Hollywood. Filmmakers have now become hyper-aware that their allegiances with big tobacco are being closely monitored by the viewing public.
If you want to give your kids an inside view of what the tobacco industry is like have them watch Thank You for Smoking – just make sure you sit and discuss the heavy hitting scenes with them afterwards.
